9:30 breakfast this morning with the same old same old cheese and meats with toast and jam.
After practice, because it was raining, I stayed in my room and worked on some film of France from last year. I also finished watching a documentary called The Two Escobars about Drug lord Pablo Escobar and soccer star Andres Escobar in Colombia. A Fantastic documentary that I would recommend to anyone. It really shows the connection between the two although Andres didn't seem to want it. IT also showed how a drug lord can really help a country when they put so much back into helping the poor. Great movie.
WE then had a meeting regarding some technical details and then had lunch. ANother great pasta dish today. Fantastic. Also salad, fruit and Chicken with Asparagus. Very good.
Our practice was from 5-7pm so that is what was planned for but as I have learned in international basketball and in foreign countries, things aren't always what they seem. We started at 5 once the kids were cleared out of the gym and the practice was pretty good for the most part. Quite intense and competitive. At about 6:20 a representative from the Spanish Basketball Federation told us we had to leave because they had one bus and they had to pick Cuba up for their game at 6:45 so we had to leave right away. PRactice was shortened quickly and away we went.
When we came back we stopped in for our nightly supper which was an absolute strike out. First one of the trip. Started with a plate of roasted veggies that weren't very good then they followed that with salad. What was in the middle of the salad??? I'll take Sardines for $200 Alex. Not a good start and it got worse. Being Friday, one could only expect fish and they brought out asparagus and some kind of fish i have never had before but one bite turned my stomach. Had to kill the taste with some Lemon yogurt.
So we left supper and headed to the gym to watch Spain and Cuba play. A good game which spain won. THey are very skilled and big. Cuba is not as big but they are fast.We should have 2 good games against them. Spain is ranked very high in the world and you could see why. they execute very well and they are very skilled.
After the game we came back and had a brief coaches meeting in the lobby to discuss the practice tomorrow at 9AM and our game plan for the game.
We have an 8AM breakfast, a 9AM practice and then we get picked up at 10 to go to the clinic. Allison is up first and she wants to have all of us involved. That will be fun. We are also going to stay and watch the other 2 coaches so I am pretty juiced for that. There will be some prep time and then game time at 7pm or 2pm in Nova Scotia.
One last point about tonight. As we were sitting in the lobby, the elevator opened and out walked a Mariachi band. A man with an accordion and a women with a guitar (or at least I think it was) and they had wireless mics on so they were busting out their music right away as they headed for the big party in the large banquet room. As soon as I saw and heard them I thought that "nighttime would find me in Rosie's Cantina. Music would play and Fellina would whirl". If you don't know what that is from you need to download yourself a copy of El Paso by Marty Robbins and give it a few dozen listens in a row. It's a tragic tale of mistakes made and love lost. I think I shall find it now and listen to it.
So now I must get to the video from the Cuba game. My job is to prep the team for games and now I must do the prep.
Until Tomorrow
Buenos Noches
