National Team 2014 - Journey to Taiwan - Day 5

Day 5. Quite possibly the hottest day EVER LOL. Definitely the hottest of our 5 days. Thankfully I get to write from my "air conditioned" room. Cool but not really cool in here.

Started the day with an adventure for breakfast. Standard omelet, hash browns and some really dry, chewy bacon. Should have known by the bacon but I decided to be adventurous and test fate. Tried a spoonful of the "chef special". Pork with mystery veggies in a cream sauce. Not great. So now to test fate even further. I see something that looks like a dumpling. I think to myself "I like dumplings" so lets try one. I have only had this experience once in China. I bit into it and immediately felt like my knees buckle and my stomach started spinning. One of the absolute worst things I have ever eaten. No idea what it was and don't want too know.
Did have a nice coffee to kill the taste and tried a custard bun. Really nice steamed buns with a small bit of custard in the middle.

After breakfast we had a film session with the girls and I showed them some things Korea would do versus us. We walked through some things in the big wedding hall so they could see how we would defend them. After a discussion earlier this week about how to prepare I think they are getting it. They were focused and taking notes to get ready. Little victories are big in the development path.

A little down time and then it was pre-game lunch. Really small for me today. Tried a small bowl of broccoli soup. Tasted fishy. One spoonful and finished. A very small bit of rice, a few chicken lumps and then something called "Fried British".  Looked like onion rings and kind of tasted like them but never saw any onion. They were best part of meal perhaps.

We hopped on the bus around 1 and headed to the game and what a game it was. We came out playing OK but so did Korea. Neither team seemed to play great D as we both were putting up points easily. We built a 38-32 lead at half but not a feel good lead. More of a wary lead. They came after us in the 3rd and we responded OK to the "punch" they threw but we weren't perfect. They took the lead 52-50 at the 3rd quarter break. A minute or so in and they had scored 2 more to go up 54-50. Timeout. I looked at our girls in the timeout and gave them a few adjustments. Then I asked them to be absolutely relentless for the rest of the game. They looked back at me with an attitude in their eyes. When they took the court they scrambled hard and played tenacious defense. Held Korea to 3 points the rest of the way and 5 in the quarter. We pulled away for a 67-57 win. I was so pleased and proud of their effort. The defensive end is where I was most pleased. Their star player was MVP of the tourney last year. In the first 2 games this week she took 49 three point shots. 49 THREE POINT SHOTS IN 2 GAMES. Well Karly Roser and Sami Hill were assigned to her and absolutely locked her up. She hit a 3 on her first possession and after that she was 1 for 6. Extremely pleased at their efforts and the girls were relentless.  Once again our bus ride home was filled with music, singing and excitement.

Got home after the game and had dinner. Some chicken, pasta, broccoli and ice cream for dessert. A nice way to end the day.

Tonight we will spend time with film and scouting then hopefully get a good night sleep. Didn't sleep well last night.
Practice tomorrow, film session and game vs Taipei who are VERY good. We will battle them no matter what.

2 more days in Taipei with two more games. Time to keep pushing forward

Until Tomorrow......
